Isle of Palms: wine columns, storm boards and waterway damp
The Intracoastal side of 32233. Less direct surf spray, a standing humidity load that never really drops, and dock-side outdoor equipment that lives outdoors year round.
The other side of 32233
Isle of Palms sits on the Intracoastal side of Atlantic Beach rather than the ocean side, and that single fact changes the exposure profile of every appliance in the house.
Direct salt spray off the surf drops off sharply with distance from the breakers, so condenser fins and hood housings on this side generally load more slowly than they do over on the ocean side of 32233. Owners here often go two to three years between condenser cleanings where the oceanfront blocks need it twice a year. That is a real difference in maintenance cost over the life of a cabinet, and it is worth knowing which side of the ZIP you are on before you accept a service interval somebody quoted you for the beach generally.
Humidity replaces spray
The trade is a moisture load that barely lets up. A house on a waterway lot has water on one side and marsh air moving across it, and the indoor dew point in summer sits high enough that anything cold and behind glass will tell you about it.
Practically, that means three complaints turn up here more than elsewhere in the ZIP:
Wine column and beverage centre doors that fog on the inside or sweat around the frame. A gasket that has taken a slight set seals well enough in a dry house and not well enough in this one.
Built-in refrigerator faces that condense along the strike side when a hinge has dropped a few millimetres. Same fault, more visible symptom.
Dishwashers that appear to dry badly. A condensation drying cycle depends on the load flashing water off after the final rinse, and a humid, closed kitchen slows that down enough to make a marginal heating circuit obvious.
Storm season, outages and late failures
The other thing a waterway lot buys you is a full share of the weather. This coast averages roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, and the beaches have sat through multi-day outages after Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024.
Very little of the damage we see is a direct strike. Direct strikes are unmistakable — scorched traces, a dead board and usually something else in the house dead alongside it. What we actually see is accumulation: every nearby strike, every utility switching event and every restoration surge is absorbed by components in the appliance’s power supply that degrade a little each time. When they are used up, an ordinary transient reaches something that cannot take it, and the appliance fails on a clear day weeks later.
The symptoms are specific enough to be useful. A control that powers up but ignores one function — a dishwasher that runs and never heats, an oven whose bake element never energises, one dead cooktop zone with the rest normal — is a failed output driver. A display with missing segments or a touch panel that registers presses in the wrong place is the interface board. An appliance that resets itself mid-cycle is usually a supply problem rather than a logic problem.
Two habits help on this side of the ZIP. If an outage is already under way, switch major appliances off at the breaker until power is properly back, because the restoration is messier than the interruption. And if the house stands empty for stretches, as many here do, leave non-essential appliances off at the breaker rather than riding out a storm season unattended.
Mid-century houses, later kitchens
Much of the housing on this side went up decades before a 36-inch column refrigerator existed, and most of it has been renovated at least once since. The renovation is what we usually meet.
Common finds: a cooktop dropped into a counter cutout sized for a much older unit, with side clearances that were never rechecked. Ventilation ducted with an extra elbow to get around a joist, costing a third of the rated extraction. A dishwasher drain run flat to the disposal with no high loop. And electrical service that was extended rather than redesigned, so a modern induction top ends up on a circuit that dips under load.
That last one is worth stressing. Intermittent shutdowns on an induction cooktop look identical whether the cause is a failing power board or a supply that sags when the air handler starts. We measure at the terminal block before anyone quotes a board.
Docks, garages and outdoor equipment
Waterway lots come with docks, and docks come with outdoor kitchens and beverage refrigeration. Anything installed outside here has to be an outdoor-rated appliance. Indoor-rated under-counter refrigeration put into a lanai surround fails fast, and it fails in a way no repair prevents from recurring.
If you have an outdoor unit, the two things that extend its life are covering it when it is out of use and cleaning its condenser on a real schedule, not when it starts running warm.
Scheduling
We work Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm, by appointment. No emergency or after-hours service.
The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair if you proceed. You get the finding in writing and a quote before any part is ordered. Genuine OEM parts, 90 days on labor, 365 days on parts, and EPA Section 608 certified technicians for sealed-system work.
Independent shop, Thermador only, working the beaches side of Duval County.
And kitchen appliances only. Waterway houses out here carry a lot of equipment — dock lighting, pumps, outdoor refrigeration, the system that keeps the house cool through a still August afternoon — and only some of it is ours. Built-in refrigeration, wine and under-counter cabinets, ovens and ranges, cooktops, dishwashers and kitchen ventilation are what we repair. Heating, air conditioning, air handlers and house ductwork are not, at any time of year, and we would rather hand you a trade name than a diagnostic fee.

Isle of Palms · what it costs
What does a repair in Isle of Palms cost?
The same book everywhere we go — there is no Isle of Palms surcharge and no coastal loading. Parts and labour, fitted, after the flat diagnostic.
| What was actually wrong | Parts and labour, fitted |
|---|---|
| The visit and the diagnosis | $80 flat |
| Oven thermostat or temperature sensor | $190–$520 |
| Igniter, spark module or surface element | $190–$500 |
| Door hinge, glass or seal | $190–$640 |
| Control board or touch panel | $420–$1,020 |
The $80 buys the visit and the diagnostic sequence, and it comes off the bill the moment you approve the work. Every row below is a range because what a part costs turns on which production revision is sitting in your cabinetry, and nobody knows that until the rating plate has been read. The whole table is on the pricing page.
Isle of Palms — asked on the phone
Is the Intracoastal side gentler on appliances than the ocean side?
In one way only. Direct spray drops off sharply away from the breakers, so condensers load more slowly here. What replaces it is a standing humidity load off the waterway that barely falls at night, and that is harder on electronics and on anything kept in a garage or on a dock.
Why do storm-season failures on this side arrive so late?
Because the damage is cumulative. Brownouts and small surges on the way in and out of an outage age a power supply rather than killing it, so the appliance carries on working and then gives up on an ordinary evening weeks afterwards, with nothing obvious to blame.
What tends to break in a mid-century house with a newer kitchen?
The joins between the two. A modern built-in dropped into an older shell inherits that shell, so we look at the opening, the clearance, the drain run and the circuit before we look at the appliance, and a fair share of calls end right there.

What owners in Isle of Palms said afterwards
4.2 out of 5, across 74 customer reviews. What is printed below is one kitchen, one call and one invoice at a time, set down by the owner who settled it.
The oven fan had started scraping on its shroud at high heat. He shimmed the housing and replaced a distorted blade, and the noise has gone. I would have liked more warning that the cavity had to be stripped.
Barnabas T.
The door glass had fogged between the panes and the right hinge had gone lazy. He replaced both hinges and the inner glass. Tidy job. He needed a second trip because one hinge arrived damaged.
Augustin L.
Warm air was pouring off the grille and the cabinet was struggling to keep up. Corrosion on the fan motor mounts was letting the blade foul. New motor and mounts. It works, although the parts took over a week to land.
Marisa D.
