Wine and under-counter refrigeration
Thermador wine column with a zone drifting warm
Wine preservation columns, under-counter refrigerator and freezer drawers, and beverage units in islands and outdoor kitchens.
Small cabinets, harder working conditions
Wine preservation columns and under-counter refrigeration are the equipment most often installed in the worst place in the house. A wine column goes into a butler’s pantry with a solid door and no ventilation. A beverage or drawer unit goes into an island base surrounded by cabinetry, or — increasingly on this stretch of the beach — into an outdoor kitchen on a covered lanai.
All of these are sealed refrigeration systems that must reject heat into the space immediately around them. Where that space is warm, still or salty, they struggle.
Two zones, one complaint
A dual-zone wine column holds a warmer red zone above and a cooler white or sparkling zone below, and each is controlled independently. When one zone drifts and the other holds, the fault is almost always in that zone’s own control loop rather than in the compressor, which is still clearly doing its job for the other half of the cabinet.
We work through it in order: the zone’s evaporator fan, the damper or valve that directs cold to that zone, the zone thermistor, and the wiring back to the control. Only when all four check out is the sealed system in question.
Owners often report the opposite pattern — both zones warm, compressor running continuously. That is a heat rejection problem, and at the beach it starts at the condenser.
Ventilation is the fault most often built in
Under-counter and column refrigeration vent through a grille, usually at the toe kick or the top of the unit. Cabinetry work frequently blocks it. We have found toe-kick grilles covered by an added floor trim, columns installed in a closet with a solid door, and outdoor units boxed into a stone surround with no clearance at the back.
The appliance runs, the surrounding cavity heats up, and the unit ends up trying to reject heat into air that is already warmer than it should be. The symptom is a cabinet that holds fine in winter and fails every June.
Three blocks from the Atlantic the same restricted airflow also means whatever air does reach the condenser is salt-laden. Fins pack faster, and a coil that would go five years inland can be visibly loaded in under two.
Glass doors, humidity and fogging
Wine columns use insulated glass with a UV-treating coating, and the door has to seal against a cabinet that is deliberately held at higher humidity than a food refrigerator — cork does not like dry air.
When the interior fogs or the frame sweats, the seal has usually failed somewhere. Either the gasket has taken a set and no longer contacts evenly, the door has dropped on a worn hinge, or the glass unit itself has lost its seal and is condensing between the panes. The third case is not repairable in place; the door assembly is replaced.
In a beach house with a high indoor dew point, a marginal seal shows up as fogging far sooner than it would elsewhere. That is a real difference, not an excuse.
Vibration and noise
Wine storage cares about vibration, so these cabinets are built with isolated compressor mounts and shelving designed to damp movement. When a unit starts to buzz audibly in a quiet room, check the simple causes first: a shelf out of its detent, a levelling foot not carrying load, a unit touching the cabinet side. Compressor mount failure is real but far less common than an installation that has shifted.
Outdoor and lanai installations
If a unit lives outdoors on this coast, it needs to be an outdoor-rated appliance, kept covered when not in use, and cleaned on a schedule. Indoor-rated under-counter refrigeration installed outside fails quickly here, and it is worth knowing that before you pay for a repair that will recur.

What it costs
What does wine and under-counter refrigeration work cost here?
The bands below are the ones this repair actually falls into — parts and labour, fitted, read off the same table the pricing page prints in full.
| What was actually wrong | Parts and labour, fitted |
|---|---|
| The visit and the diagnosis | $80 flat |
| Refrigeration column sealed system | $870–$2,290 |
The $80 buys the visit and the diagnostic sequence, and it comes off the bill the moment you approve the work. Every row below is a range because what a part costs turns on which production revision is sitting in your cabinetry, and nobody knows that until the rating plate has been read. The whole table is on the pricing page.
Wine and under-counter refrigeration — asked on the phone
Why does the upper zone drift warm through the afternoon?
A dual-zone cabinet runs one cooling circuit and shares it, so the upper zone is fed through a divider damper or a small fan. When that fan hesitates from cold or the damper sticks, the zone furthest from the evaporator is the one that shows it, and warm afternoons show it first.
Is condensation inside the glass door a fault or just humidity?
It is a fault, and on a glass door it is normally the heated frame element or the humidity control rather than the weather. The frame is warmed deliberately to hold the dew point off the glass, and when that stops the door fogs every morning whatever the room is doing.
Does an under-counter unit really need its own ventilation?
Yes, and a missing one is the fault we most often find built in rather than worn out. These cabinets reject heat through a grille at the toe, and an island base or a lanai surround closed in around them leaves the compressor breathing its own exhaust.

What owners said after this repair
4.2 out of 5, across 74 customer reviews. What is printed below is one kitchen, one call and one invoice at a time, set down by the owner who settled it.
Our beverage cabinet had begun humming through the cabinetry rather than into the room. He found a mounting foot that had lost its pad, levelled the unit and isolated it properly. The kitchen is quiet again.
Hesper D.
It holds temperature now, which is the main thing. The first visit did not reach the cause and the second was two weeks later, so a case of wine was lost while we waited on it.
Nikolai M.
The undercounter refrigerator had begun sweating around the door frame. He replaced the perimeter gasket and adjusted the closer. Much improved. The part took a while to come and I was not updated much.
