Less direct surf spray, a standing humidity load that never really drops, and dock-side outdoor equipment that lives outdoors year round. ### The other side of 32250 Isle of Palms sits on the Intracoastal side of Jacksonville Beach rather than the ocean side, and that single fact changes the exposure profile of every appliance in the house. Direct salt spray off the surf drops off sharply with distance from the breakers, so condenser fins and hood housings on this side generally load more slowly than they do on 1st Street. Owners here often go two to three years between condenser cleanings where the oceanfront blocks need it twice a year. A gasket that has taken a slight set seals well enough in a dry house and not well enough in this one. Built-in refrigerator faces that condense along the strike side when a hinge has dropped a few millimetres. Same fault, more visible symptom. Dishwashers that appear to dry badly. A condensation drying cycle depends on the load flashing water off after the final rinse, and a humid, closed kitchen slows that down enough to make a marginal heating circuit obvious. ### Storm season, outages and late failures The other thing a waterway lot buys you is a full share of the weather. This coast averages roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year, and the beaches have sat through multi-day outages after Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017 and Helene in 2024. Very little of the damage we see is a direct strike. Direct strikes are unmistakable — scorched traces, a dead board and usually something else in the house dead alongside it. What we actually see is accumulation: every nearby strike, every utility switching event and every restoration surge is absorbed by components in the appliance’s power supply that degrade a little each time. When they are used up, an ordinary transient reaches something that cannot take it, and the appliance fails on a clear day weeks later. The symptoms are specific enough to be useful. A control that powers up but ignores one function — a dishwasher that runs and never heats, an oven whose bake element never energises, one dead cooktop zone with the rest normal — is a failed output driver. A display with missing segments or a touch panel that registers presses in the wrong place is the interface board. An appliance that resets itself mid-cycle is usually a supply problem rather than a logic problem. Two habits help on this side of the ZIP. If an outage is already under way, switch major appliances off at the breaker until power is properly back, because the restoration is messier than the interruption. Intermittent shutdowns on an induction cooktop look identical whether the cause is a failing power board or a supply that sags when the air handler starts. We measure at the terminal block before anyone quotes a board. ### Docks, garages and outdoor equipment Waterway lots come with docks, and docks come with outdoor kitchens and beverage refrigeration. Anything installed outside here has to be an outdoor-rated appliance. Indoor-rated under-counter refrigeration put into a lanai surround fails fast, and it fails in a way no repair prevents from recurring.
