> No heat on a Thermador stove top usually traces to a misseated burner cap, a wet igniter, a self-clean or demo lockout, or a tripped breaker. Check these first.

## A Thermador burner or cooking zone that gives no heat: what to check before you call

Published October 11, 2026

When a Thermador stove top gives no heat, rule out the simple causes before assuming a part has died. On a gas rangetop, a burner that clicks without lighting nearly always has a cap sitting off its base or an igniter that is wet or greasy. On an induction cooktop, the display usually shows a code that explains why the zones stay cold. On a Pro Grand or Pro Harmony range, a running self-clean or Sabbath program shuts part of the top down on purpose. Work through the checks below in order; most take five minutes and need no tools.

### Is the top locked out on purpose?

Thermador builds a few deliberate lockouts into its ranges, and each one looks like a fault if nobody told you about it. During self-clean, which lasts 2 hours on Pro Grand and Pro Harmony models, the oven door locks and both the surface elements and the ExtraLow burners are disabled until the cycle is over. Sabbath mode also turns off the ExtraLow burners, although the regular full-size burners keep working. If someone in the house started either program, let it finish and then try the burner again.

The ExtraLow setting fools people as well. At its lowest position the XLO flame burns for roughly 10 seconds and then goes out for roughly 50, over and over each minute. That pause is how it holds a delicate simmer, so a flame that disappears and returns by itself is normal, not a dead burner.

### Gas burners: caps, igniters and supply

Lift the grate and look at the burner. The cap has to sit flat and centered on its base; tilted even a little, it blocks the spark from reaching the gas and the burner just clicks. Reseat it and try again. Next, find the small white ceramic igniter beside the burner. Thermador makes these from brittle ceramic, so clean one with a cotton swab dampened in soapy water, let it dry fully, and never scrape it with a knife or pick. After a pot boils over, a soaked burner may refuse to spark for a few hours until the water evaporates.

When no burner on the top lights at all, look upstream: a closed shutoff valve behind the range, an interruption in the gas service, or the 120-volt circuit that powers the spark system on all-gas models, which run on a 15 or 20 amp supply. Confirm the plug is seated and the breaker is on. Salt air off the ocean is hard on bare metal in Jacksonville Beach kitchens, and igniter terminals corrode like anything else.

### Induction and electric tops: read the display

Induction cooktops report most no-heat problems with a code:

| Display | What it means | What you can do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| dE, zones cold | Demo mode is on | Breaker off 30 seconds, then touch any control within 3 minutes |
| F1 or F6 | A zone overheated and switched itself off | Let the glass cool, then restart |
| F2, F4 or E7015 | The electronics overheated | Clear anything blocking the vents below, let it cool |
| F5 | Hot cookware sits near the control panel | Move the pan off the controls |

Induction also heats only magnetic cookware. If a fridge magnet will not cling to the bottom of a pan, the zone cannot warm it.

Dual-fuel and induction ranges need 240/208-volt power on a dedicated circuit, 50 amps for double-oven and induction models and 30 amps for most single-oven ones. A double-pole breaker that has tripped, or lost one of its two legs, can leave the elements cold while the clock and lights still work. If the top went dead right after a lightning storm, read our note on [storm season and control boards](https://thermadorrepairjacksonvillebeach.com/notes/storm-season-and-control-boards/) before you reset anything twice.

### When to call, and what it costs

If you smell gas, turn every knob off, leave the house without flipping switches, and call the gas utility from outside. That comes before any repair.

Otherwise, book a visit when a burner still only clicks after the cap is seated and the igniter is clean and dry, when one induction zone stays cold with no code at all, or when an F code keeps returning after the cooktop has cooled and the power has been reset. Those point to an igniter, a burner switch, a spark module, a power board or the element itself, and each needs testing with a meter rather than guesswork.

Replacing an igniter, spark module or surface element typically runs $190–$500, and the firm figure comes after the $80 diagnostic. The [pricing page](https://thermadorrepairjacksonvillebeach.com/pricing/) explains what that visit includes, and our [cooktop and rangetop service page](https://thermadorrepairjacksonvillebeach.com/service/cooktops-and-rangetops/) covers burners that click and will not light. Repairs use genuine OEM parts.

If it is the fault above

### What does this one cost to put right?

The bands that cover the fault this note describes. Parts and labour, fitted, on top of the flat diagnostic that is credited back when the work goes ahead.

*Repair price bands, parts and labour, fitted*

| What was actually wrong | Parts and labour, fitted |
| --- | --- |
| The visit and the diagnosis | $80 flat |
| Oven thermostat or temperature sensor | $190–$520 |
| Igniter, spark module or surface element | $190–$500 |
| Bake or broil element | $190–$590 |
| Door hinge, glass or seal | $190–$640 |

The $80 buys the visit and the diagnostic sequence, and it comes off the bill the moment you approve the work. Every row below is a range because what a part costs turns on which production revision is sitting in your cabinetry, and nobody knows that until the rating plate has been read. Asked after this note

### Why does my Thermador burner click but never light?

Usually the cap is sitting crooked on its base, or the igniter is damp or coated in grease. Seat the cap flat, wipe the ceramic igniter gently with a cotton swab and soapy water, let everything dry, and try again. If it still only clicks, the igniter, the burner switch or the spark module needs testing.

### Why does my Thermador range top stop working while the oven cleans itself?

That is deliberate. On Pro Grand and Pro Harmony ranges the self-clean cycle locks the oven door and shuts off the surface elements and ExtraLow burners for the whole run. When the cycle ends and the oven cools, the top works normally again.

### What does dE mean on a Thermador induction cooktop?

It means the cooktop is in demo mode, so the display lights up while the zones stay cold. Cut power at the breaker or fuse for half a minute, restore it, and touch any control within a few minutes to bring the cooktop out of demo mode.

4.2 out of 5, across 74 customer reviews. What is printed below is one kitchen, one call and one invoice at a time, set down by the owner who settled it.

- ★★★★★ Self clean would start and then abandon itself partway with the door still locked. He replaced the latch motor and the thermal cut-out behind it, then ran a clean cycle end to end while he wrote up the paperwork. Cressida O. 2026-08-29
- ★★★★★ The steam oven stopped drawing from its tank and threw an error every time. He descaled the whole circuit, replaced the pump, and explained how often it needs flushing given the water we have here. Beatrix H. 2026-08-12
- ★★★☆☆ The range cooks properly again, so the outcome was right. The process was not: a booking moved at short notice, then a wait for a board that nobody chased until I asked where it had got to. Ferdinand A. 2026-08-21
